JEA: San Jose Boulevard lanes closed during water main break repairs reopened

Lanes of San Jose Boulevard from Plummer Cove Road to Ricky Drive have been closed since July 8.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — JEA says the San Jose Boulevard lanes that have been closed for two weeks during water main break repairs will reopen Monday.

The two inside southbound lanes of San Jose Boulevard from Plummer Cove Road to Old River Road, as well as the two inside northbound lanes from Ricky Road to Claire Lane, closed at 8 p.m. on July 8. JEA says a water main break happened in the area 25 feet underground.

JEA spokesperson Karen McAllister says as of 5 a.m. Monday, all northbound travel lanes are open, while crews continue asphalt restoration in the southbound lanes.

"The two inside southbound travel lanes from Plummer Cove Road to Old River Road will continue to be closed until the restoration work is complete," JEA told First Coast News in a statement.

Restoration work is expected to be finished by Monday afternoon, according to the utility.

"It's been about 25 minutes added to my actual route," Kinna Beerbower, a neighbor, previously told First Coast News. "I have never seen the three lanes of San Jose shut down to one lane."

"It's like anything else. I mean, it's not cool, but I mean, I heard they're working 24/7 doing the best they can," neighbor Damian Keister added.

JEA said soil saturation conditions contributed to the length of time to make the repairs and is still looking into what caused the break. Additionally, the company said a similar break happened last year in the same area and is working to prevent them in the future so things can keep moving.

"We thank commuters for their patience through this time," McAllister told First Coast News.
