Sexually abused pit bull sent to nationally renowned training facility

The pit bull named Princess was saved by the Pit Sisters from a home where she and a child were sexually abused by the owner.

A sexually abused pit bull has another chance at life as the Jacksonville Humane Society stepped up to take custody of her after almost being euthanized on Sept. 25.

The pit bull named Princess was saved by the Pit Sisters from a home where she and a child were sexually abused by the owner. Her tortured past made her aggressive toward men and children.

After almost a year at the rescue, it was determined she would be put down.

Pit Sisters is relocating to a residential area in Callahan. The owner of Pit Sisters worried if Princess would get out, she could hurt someone.

First Coast News reported Princess’s story last week, and the Humane Society stepped in to adopt Princess before she was euthanized.

“We saw the plea on television about the difficult decision they were facing and so we offered another opportunity,” Denise Deisler, CEO of the Jacksonville Humane Society, said.

The Jacksonville Humane Society works with a training organization called “Dogs Playing For Life,” which may be the answer for Princess.

“These are some of the top trainers in the nation,” Deisler said. “They’re used to working with shelter dogs that are not doing well in a shelter environment. So this is their specialty. This is what they do.”

Hopes are high for Princess, but Deisler says the community’s safety comes first. If Princess can’t be rehabilitated, they will have to face the difficult decision that Pit Sisters did.

“None of us should be putting dogs out if we’re not confident there’s a safe placement,” Deisler said.

Logan Shannahan worked for Pit Sisters and worked directly with Princess. She believes this training could give her another shot at life.

“She’s not unintelligent,” Shannahan said. “She’s a smart dog and very treat-motivated, so I think she’d do incredibly well with some consistent training from someone who’s appropriate to do this.”

There is no timeline on how long Princess will be trained for. Deisler said it all depends whether she is responding to training or if she will ultimately need to be put down.
