Neighbors call for improvements at 'Dead Man's Curve' after 18-year-old dies in crash

The 90-degree curve on Dunn Creek Road has developed a reputation among neighbors as being dangerous.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A sharp turn on Jacksonville’s Northside is getting attention after an 18-year-old was killed in a crash last night.

A truck went into the guard rail on Dunn Creek Road Monday night.

Five people were in the truck when it crashed through. The crash report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office shows four weren’t hurt, but one died.

“It was definitely a new challenge once we moved over here," said Bryant Bass, who lives near the curve.

Bass has to take the 90-degree curve on Dunn Creek Road every day as part of his commute.

He says it can be nerve wracking, especially when he thinks about the number of wrecks he’s seen at what neighbors call 'Dead Man’s Curve.'

“You can never judge who’s coming around that corner, how fast they’re coming around that corner," said Bass. "It’s more of a blind spot for you looking around that side.”

Bass isn’t alone in feeling the curve is dangerous.

First Coast News received several comments about the curve’s history on a post about an 18-year-old who was most recently killed in a crash on Dunn Creek Road.

“It’s devastating It’s truly devastating," said Bass. "My heart goes out to the families, friends who may have lost somebody or were hurt, anything like that, but that’s just sad.”

Jacksonville City Councilman Reggie Gaffney Jr., who represents the area, said he’s already reached out to the traffic engineering team and they are “continuously working to implement proactive measures to enhance safety and improve the well-being of all.”

After taking the curve every day, Bass feels it needs to be a complete stop.

“I feel like if you can address it, anything works," said Bass. "It is broke, so let’s fix it.”

The crash report from JSO says the driver wasn’t distracted or suspected of being impaired, but they were going to fast for the conditions.

A city spokesperson says records show four crashes where the driver went off the road at this curve in the last five years.

The city did install new signs in February 2023 to help drivers pick it up before they hit the curve.

That spokesperson said neighbors can fill out a traffic calming request if they feel like more is needed.

The city has received two requests since 2020 for Dunn Creek, but neither mentioned this curve specifically.

Residents can request traffic calming by dialing 630-CITY.
