JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An 18-year-old woman is dead after a crash in the city's Oceanway neighborhood Monday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Around 6:30 p.m., a pickup truck was driving westbound on Dunn Creek Road when the driver "failed to negotiate" an "abrupt" 90-degree turn in the roadway, police said. The pickup truck left the roadway, went through a barrier and into a tree.
Police said there were five occupants, aged between 17 and 22, in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The front passenger, an 18-year-old woman, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.
The other occupants in the vehicle gave the victim CPR, police said, but she was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
No other occupants in the vehicle were taken to the hospital.
"We are still working to determine whether speed was a factor, but I think, in most traffic fatalities, speed is a piece of the puzzle," said JSO Traffic Homicide Sergeant Robert Hungerford.
This marks the 90th person killed in a crash in Duval County this year, and the fourth over the holiday weekend, according to police.
Dunn Creek Road is closed in all directions as crews investigate the crash.
