JSO releases bodycam footage from officer-involved shooting in Hogans Creek area

JSO said the suspect had a "lengthy" criminal history, including aggravated assault, drug sales and domestic battery.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that killed a man who appeared to be stabbing someone in the Hogan's Creek neighborhood in late October.

According to JSO, Officer J. Rose and Officer J. Montgomery were on Grothe Street around 8:30 p.m. responding to a carjacking on Oct. 28. As Rose gathered information from the victim, an older woman, several people nearby alerted him of a man with a knife.

In the bodycam footage, you can hear and see the bystanders approach Rose, telling him, "This man got a knife!"

Rose then runs toward two people on the street tied up in a struggle. One of them, later identified as 54-year-old Dujuan Jackson, appears to be striking the other with a knife. As Rose runs toward the two, he yells at Jackson five times to drop the knife.

Rose shoots Jackson after he doesn't drop the knife and the struggle between he and the other man continues.

Montgomery had also run to the scene and shot Jackson as well, JSO said.

Rose is then seen on footage calling for the victim who appeared to have been stabbed by Jackson. The victim takes his shirt off, but they do not find any stab wounds.

The officer then brings his attention back to Jackson to handcuff him and administer first aid. In doing so, Rose discovers Jackson had been wielding a metal butter knife.

"It's a [explicit] butter knife," Rose said.

Despite attempts to render aid, Jackson died at the scene.

JSO said Jackson had a "lengthy" criminal history, including aggravated assault, drug sales and domestic battery. He had just been released from a 5-year prison sentence in June. JSO said witnesses told officers Jackson approached the carjacking victim's family with the knife, showed aggression toward a child then attempted to stab a man.

The State Attorney's Office will review the incident to determine if the officer's actions were legal. Once complete, JSO will conduct its own internal review of the incident to assure the officers didn't violate JSO policy.
