JSO: Officers shoot, kill man who appeared to be involved in stabbing

Police discovered the knife was a butter knife after the man had already been shot and he had dropped it.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: The man shot and killed by officers in this shooting was 54-year-old Djuan Jackson, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told First Coast News Tuesday. The sheriff's office says his arrest history includes aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault, domestic battery and sale and possession of narcotics.

A man was shot and killed by two Jacksonville sheriff’s officers during an incident involving a knife in the Durkeeville area Monday night.

According to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, officers were on scene responding to a carjacking on Eaverson Street around 8:40 p.m.

Police say the victim of that carjacking was an older woman, and family was gathered around as police investigated for about an hour. A suspect approached the family and started “harassing” them, according to JSO. The family told police they had seen the suspect in the neighborhood “recently.”

This is when JSO says he pulled out a knife, and a family member alerted police, shouting “he’s got a knife.” Officers saw the suspect “engaging” with one of the family members and making a “stabbing motion.”

Waters says officers believed the person was being stabbed. This is when they fired on the suspect and got him off the person he appeared to be stabbing.

He was shot and died on the scene, despite police efforts to render aid.

When the man was down, officers handcuffed him, which Waters says is protocol. They were able to see at this point that he had dropped the knife, which turned out to be a butter knife.

The person police believed was a stabbing victim turned out to have no injuries.

Waters says everything happened very quickly: “There was a lot of confusion, a lot of noise.” He said officers had to decide to engage in order to “save lives.”

The State Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident and will determine if it was justified. JSO’s cold case unit is also investigating on scene.
