Jacksonville business receives safety upgrades after series of car crashes

For two years, the owners say they reached out to city leaders for a solution. In March, they contacted Anthony Austin for help and now the problem is solved.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Ask Anthony team is getting results for a Jacksonville business.

Duval's Finest Countertops on Emerson Street has been the unintentional target of numerous car crashes. The building has been hit six times in the past two years.

"They always miss the corner and just go right into the building," Vicky Marcal explained.

For two years, the owners have been reaching out to city leaders for a solution. In March, William and Vicky Marcal contacted Anthony Austin for help. He aired their story on First Coast News at 6 p.m.

Jacksonville City Councilman Joe Carlucci, who represents District 5 where the business is located, saw the story and called Anthony with possible solutions.

"Starting at 11 p.m., the light will stay red until a car pulls up to it. That really helps with a lot of drunk drivers or drivers who aren't paying attention," Carlucci said.

Within just a few weeks, Carlucci was meeting with Florida Department of Transportation representatives to discuss traffic and safety upgrades.

"I think we're in a much better spot now. Much safer spot now for this business," Carlucci added.

Some of the changes include raised curbing along Emerson.

"The curb was kind of sunk down. So, there wasn't any response if a driver started drifting over. They could just come all the way up and back into this building," Carlucci said.

If you drive down Emerson heading toward Downtown Jacksonville, you may notice there are new, yellow signs alerting drivers to the curve in the road.

"It sort of adds an additional barrier and it adds visibility for the drivers as well," Carlucci explained.

Marcal is pleased with the changes and can now sit in her office with some peace of mind.

"For two years, we've been trying to contact people. For you to come in and do that and help us out, it took two months for everything to get resolved," Marcal said.
