A man is facing charges after crashing a vehicle into the front of a Publix in the Lakeshore area on Wednesday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Officers responded to the Publix located at 4495 Roosevelt Boulevard Wednesday afternoon regarding a traffic crash.

Upon arrival, police spoke with the driver of a vehicle, identified as Terry Leggett, 80, sitting in the front seat.

Officers said Leggett had bloodshot, watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Leggett denied drinking any alcohol that day and at the time of the crash, according to an arrest report.

Officers performed a DUI test on Leggett, who showed "multiple indicators of impairment" after it was completed. The report said after the test, officers found a half-empty bottle of vodka inside the vehicle Leggett was driving.

Leggett was subsequently arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, DUI with damage to property, careless driving, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Police noted there was "heavy damage" to a pillar located on the front of the store, and the vehicle's airbags were deployed as a result of the crash.

Leggett told police he was driving in the parking lot when two people walked in front of his car and he slammed on the brakes and struck a wall, according to the report.

A tow truck driver at the scene told police he saw Leggett "drinking some type of liquor," the report states.

"Publix management requested the vehicle not be towed as they were afraid once it was removed the pillar would collapse," the report states.

The Publix store manager told officers he heard a "boom" at the time of the crash.

Leggett will be in court on Thursday.
