Grandmother pleads for help finding driver in crash that killed 6-year-old in Jacksonville

The report says the light-colored sedan that caused the crash drove away but was caught on surveillance from a nearby business. Police have not released the video.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are still looking for the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a six-year-old in Jacksonville over the weekend.

The crash happened Saturday night in the 6800 block of Merrill Avenue, with a woman and two girls in an SUV.

According to the report, both children were in car seats. Six-year-old Crystal was thrown from the SUV and died at the scene.

Family says her little sister, 5-year-old Olivia, did not suffer any injuries, but her mother, 26-year-old Rebecca, is in the ICU with two collapsed lungs, facial fractures and broken ribs.

They family has asked First Coast News not to use their last names.

The report says the car that caused the crash drove away but was caught on surveillance from a nearby business.

Rebecca's mother Debra Murray said she woke up to a call just before midnight that her daughter was in the hospital with Olivia.

Murray said Rebecca told her three men in a white sedan forced her off the road. She ran into a telephone pole.

She says Rebecca took her daughters to the store that night to pick up decorations for a school Valentine's Day party.

"My whole family is devastated,” Murray said. “We're in shock. I'm just trying to stay strong for Rebecca. I can't imagine losing a kid. I know what I'm going through, losing my first grandchild."

Murray said she was an artistic first grader who loved learning, especially science and math.

"She was just a happy-go-lucky kid,” Murray said. “Really smart. Really smart girl. She loves school. Nana got the pleasure of doing homework every day. That was my joy."

She shared a close bond with her little sister, who doesn't know yet what happened.

"Crystal was a bright girl,” Murray said. “She had a bright future ahead of her."

Rebecca's co-workers have created a GoFundMe to help her while she's out of work.

Murray believes someone out there can lead them to the people responsible for the tragedy.

"You know this car, report it,” Murray said. “Do the right thing. This can happen to your family in a blink of an eye."

If you know anything about the crime, you’re asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.
