6-year-old girl ejected, killed after hit-and-run crash on Merrill Road

Police are still searching for a "light-colored" sedan that was involved in the crash that occurred at approximately 11 p.m. in the 6800 block of Merrill Road.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 6-year-old girl was killed following a crash on Merrill Road Saturday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police are still searching for a "light-colored" sedan that was involved in the crash that occurred at approximately 11 p.m. in the 6800 block of Merrill Road.

JSO said a silver SUV was heading westbound on Merrill Road in the right lane when the sedan changed lanes, crashing into the SUV and forcing it off the road.

The SUV, which was carrying a woman and two children, hit a wooden telephone pole. The driver and one of the children were taken to a local hospital by the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department.

A crash report states the other child, a 6-year-old girl, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the report, both children involved in the crash were in forward-facing car seats.

The light-colored sedan fled the scene and did not report the crash to the Sheriff's Office.

The crash was captured on surveillance cameras from a business nearby, but according to the owner, investigators have taken the video as evidence.

First Coast News Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson says it’s part of the steps investigators will take to find the suspect and bring them to justice.

“They will be checking body shops, to see if someone is going for a quick repair, they’ll check paint shops as well because they’ll try to disguise the color and do things to try and get away from it," Ken Jefferson, Crime Expert, said.

This is the 16th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, JSO said.

Anyone with information about the light-colored sedan, which will likely have damage to its passenger side doors, is encouraged to contact the sheriff's office at (904)630-0500 or call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

Editor's note: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office previously stated the victim's age was 4 years old. The victim's family confirmed to First Coast News the victim was a 6-year-old.
