Former Jacksonville City Councilmembers Katrina Brown and Reginald Brown, are back in court Wednesday, marking their third day of trial.
Katrina Brown showed up to the federal courthouse around 9 a.m., and for the first time since the trial began, did not offer any comment to reporters. Reginald Brown arrived shortly after.
Delays in court proceedings have continued as Katrina Brown continues to represent herself. At times, those in courtroom listening having a hard time following her cross-examination of witnesses.
On Tuesday, the trial continued with the federal government’s fifth witness. Prosecutors questioned Frank Palmisano, an executive with Biz Capital in New Orleans and administrator of the $2.65 million Small Business Administration loan the Browns are charged with misusing.
“Painful" was the word several observers used to describe watching Katrina Brown plead her case. The mood in Courtroom 10 B is often one of stunned silence during proceedings but even more so on Tuesday.
Court ended at 4 p.m. Tuesday, somewhat early, due to a medical issue of Katrina Brown’s standby counsel.
"The process is moving forward and I'm excited that it's moving forward, and coming to an end," Reginald Brown said as he was leaving court.
Prosecutors said they wanted to call 11 witnesses on Wednesday. If they do, they say they will be on schedule for a Friday finish to the government's case.
