Family identifies 13-year-old girl who died in Baker County camper fire

The 13-year-old girl who died in the Baker County camper fire Wednesday has been identified by family as Avery Brown.

BAKER COUNTY, Fla. — The family of the 13-year-old girl who died Wednesday after a camper in Baker County caught fire, has identified the teenager.

Family remembers Avery Brown as "a sweet and beautiful and outgoing little girl" who "lit up every room she was in," a GoFundMe page states.

According to the Baker County Sheriff's Office, deputies and members of Baker County Fire & Rescue responded to the fire near Orbey Rhoden Road in Glen St. Mary Wednesday morning and found a camper engulfed in flames.

Police say there were other occupants inside the camper, too, as they escaped with no injuries. The GoFundMe page states that Avery was a 6th grader at Baker County Middle School and was the oldest of nine siblings, four in which were also involved in the fire.

Members of the State Fire Marshal's Office also responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Deputies said the initial investigation suggests the fire was started by a space heater that was inside the camper, but the official cause remains under investigation.

Neighbors watched the fire in horror, unable to contact 911.

“My husband went to the kitchen, and he just hollered out for me to come," said Carrie Keith, who lives behind where the camper caught fire.

When Keith got to the kitchen, she was shocked to see the fire just on the other side of their fence. She told First Coast News that she couldn’t believe how fast their neighbor’s camper went up in flames.

“We tried calling 911, but we don’t have service out here," said Keith.

The GoFundMe page also mentioned that updates will be provided "throughout the next few days, including any arrangements made for [Avery's] funeral services."
