Why looking at the sun for the eclipse is so dangerous

Don't chance it and be smart when watching the eclipse Monday.

MACHIAS, N.Y. — As excitement builds for the upcoming solar eclipse, it's important to prioritize safety, especially when it comes to viewing the celestial event.

Kimberly Riordan, an experienced optometrist, underscores the critical importance of using proper eye protection during the eclipse. She warns against the dangers of looking at the sun without adequate shielding, emphasizing that even a brief glance can have serious consequences.

"Many people underestimate the potential harm caused by the sun's rays," explains Riordan. "The wavelengths emitted by the sun can penetrate through the cornea, natural lenses, and into the retina, causing irreversible damage. This can lead to permanent impairment of the macular, the region responsible for clear vision."

Riordan stresses that standard sunglasses or polarized lenses are insufficient for safe solar viewing. Instead, specialized solar viewing glasses are essential to shield the eyes from harmful radiation. These glasses provide the necessary protection to enjoy the eclipse without risking eye damage.

"It's crucial to have the proper equipment ready," advises Riordan. "Ensure that you have certified solar viewing glasses on hand to safeguard your eyesight. By taking precautions, you can safely experience this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon."

The primary concerns with staring at the sun is the risk of solar retinopathy, a condition where the light-sensitive cells in the retina become damaged. The retina is the tissue at the back of the eye responsible for sensing light and sending visual signals to the brain.

When exposed to the sun's intense light, the cells in the retina can become overwhelmed and sustain permanent damage. This damage can lead to vision problems, including blurred vision, blind spots, and even permanent vision loss.

Safety should always be the top priority when observing the solar eclipse. With the right precautions in place, spectators can marvel at the celestial spectacle while protecting their vision.

So, as the solar eclipse approaches, remember to stay safe, use proper eye protection, and savor the wonder of this extraordinary event.
