Water reaches business doorways after storms flood San Marco streets

Painting with a Twist had water up to its door as customers were arriving for their last class Saturday evening.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Saturday's storms caused several areas across Jacksonville to see flood waters push into yards and driveways.

San Marco was no exception, where businesses near San Marco Boulevard and LaSalle dealt with several inches of water and nearly impassable roads.

A First Coast News crew saw a family ferrying two little girls across the knee-high water.

Car after car would hit the deepest part of the flooding before three-point turning instead of risking plowing through and getting stuck.

An artist at Painting with a Twist said the water splashed up against their door, but didn’t quite get in.

She said they were fortunate that, although they offered refunds to their customers, they had nearly everyone come for a sold-out class.

“Completely unexpected," Laura Green said. "We’ve had things over the years. We survived Hurricane Irma. Our studio was under three feet of water. We really had time to prepare for that. This was definitely not something I was thinking I was going to encounter tonight.”

The City of Jacksonville is spending about a million dollars to put in a pump station on LaSalle Street.

It’s expected to be completed around the end of the year after 18 months of construction.

A project manager said when they broke ground, it would eventually be able to clear the whole section of flooding in 30-45 minutes.
