Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade canceled ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry addressed the public Tuesday. He says Duval County Public Schools will not close, but the Veterans Day Parade is canceled.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mayor Lenny Curry announced Tuesday that the Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade has been cancelled ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole.

The parade was scheduled to be held on Friday, Nov. 11 in front of the Jacksonville Center for Performing Arts.

Curry says he and his team are watching Tropical Storm Nicole as forecasts show the storm impacting the Jacksonville area Thursday. So far, there is no local state of emergency, though Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for much of the state, including Duval County.

So far, Duval County Public Schools will not close Thursday. Schools were already closed for Friday because of Veterans Day.

Curry says that trash pickup will continue as scheduled.

He urged residents to clear up yard debris and make sure it does not block storm drains, as well as secure any outdoor furniture.

Forecast

Nicole continues to slowly organize Tuesday and is expected to strengthen as it drifts west over the next 48 hours passing over the Bahamas and then the Florida Coast. The storm is expected to make landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane in South East Florida early Thursday morning.

Tropical Storm warnings have been issued for the First Coast and Southeast Georgia including local waters, and this does include a storm surge warning for our entire area as well.

Our main concern will be the combination of tides 3-5 ft. above normal and heavy rain. The highest risk of flooding looks to be Thursday.
