Volcanic Pressure Wave from Tonga recorded in Jacksonville

Local WEATHERSTEM sites in Jacksonville recorded a pressure wave this morning from a volcano on the other side of the world.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It's hard to believe, a volcano on the other side of the world in the South Pacific could be detected by instruments here in Jacksonville.

That was the case this morning as a pressure wave sent out from a massive volcanic eruption near Tonga cascades across the globe and eventually over pressure sensors on the First Coast.

The image below shows the time the wave passed over Jacksonville with multiple WEATHERSTEM sites reporting the spike in pressure.

Did this impact our weather at all?

No, it did not as the pressure wave could only be detected on Barometers and not anything that would influence our atmosphere in a significant way.

The pressure wave did produce a boom as far away as Alaska which after analysis could make it one of the loudest sounds on record.

The Eruption also produced a Significant Tsunami in Fiji with sea-level rise as far away as California.

More information on that can be found here.
