'It looks like it was tornadic': National Weather Service surveys storm damage on Jacksonville Westside

The National Weather Service was in the neighborhood on Peacock Ridge Drive, surveying the area to see if a tornado touched down.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sunday's storm ravaged a rural neighborhood at Jacksonville's Westside, and the National Weather Service was in the neighborhood on Peacock Ridge Drive Monday morning surveying the area to see if a tornado touched down.

One meteorologist suggested there were signs of a tornado in the area, based on trees uprooted, roofs to homes damaged and downed powerlines.

"It does look like, at this particular time, it looks like it was tornadic," said Scott Coredo, the meteorologist in charge with the National Weather Service Jacksonville.

NWS Jacksonville has to assess the damages and learn the tornado's path along with its intensity. The storm also brought quarter-sized hail to the area. Coredo said hail from a storm isn't uncommon.

"We have a high frequency for severe weather and also tornadic weather," Coredo added.

For homeowners such as Theo Vandermere, he's looking at a tall list of errands. Downed trees surrounded his home while his two cars were crushed. Fortunately, no one was hurt, including his animals.

"It's going to be an ongoing process," Vandermere said. "All the fencing needs to be done now. Privacy fence is gone. I'm trying to get the water up back and running in the house."

Vandermere is from South Africa and he's lived on the First Coast for two years. He knows how rough storms can get. He's experienced a hurricane, but never a tornado. He recalled seeing one from his house.

"It was pretty bad," said Vandermere.

NWS Jacksonville is awaiting the results of the storms' intensity to confirm whether a tornado did touch down in the area.
