San Marco restaurant prepared for hurricane season

Residents in Springfield and San Marco say after living in Florida for a while you get used to hurricane prep protocols.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — How do you prep your business for hurricanes, especially if you live in an area that's prone to flooding?

“It flooded almost up to bar level so that was about four feet maybe and we had to close down for about two months and redo everything," said General Manager of Bistro X, Dana Simpson.

Simpson says she’s not looking forward to the heavy rain but she’s ready.

“We are definitely going to try to prepare this time you know put sandbags outside the doors hopefully that will at least keep it even it rains or floods like crazy it’ll at least keep it from coming in the restaurant," said Sampson.

Simpson worked in the restaurant business for years and she says she’s survived a lot worst.

“Once you get used to it. it’s easy. You make with what you have. You protect with what you can and then you clean up afterward," said Simpson.

Neighbors in Springfield and San Marco say after living in Florida for a while you get used to hurricane prep protocols.

“We would put plywood on all the windows and I ended up doing it for five other people and just in case there was a hurricane we were days ahead of time. Once you do the plywood you would label it and then put it on the windows," said a resident from Springfield, John Stinson.

As people in San Marco know even small storms can cause major problems.

“Making sure you have plenty of food and water and that you’re in a safe spot like this is not the type of spot that I would stay when the wind and rains come, we would go more inland or away from the water," said Isaac Kinman, a San Marco resident.

Kristen Chappell says she lives on the Southside and while it may not flood as much in that area she still takes caution.

“We do get sandbags it doesn’t flood where we are but just in case for our preparation we do get sandbags," said Chappell.

Stinson says it's better to be safe than sorry.

“Anything ahead of time because it comes down to the last minute there’s going to be a rush at the stores and they're going to be out of things that you need and have a travel plan if that’s what you need to do," said Stinson.
