Neighbors concerned about water level on only road onto Jacksonville island

People on Black Hammock Island said there was more flooding over Sawpit Road this week than they'd ever seen from rain.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The only way on and off an island in Northeast Jacksonville on Thursday and Friday was through water.

Neighbors are keeping a close eye on the height of the water on Sawpit Road, the one road on and off Black Hammock Island.

On Thursday, there was more flooding on the road than some people said they’d ever seen from rain.

Several people told First Coast News the road appeared to have a foot and a half of water on it Thursday.

Cody Braddock, who lives on the island, said the flooding has caused some other problems for neighbors. He said some people can’t use their bathrooms because there’s water covering their septic tanks.

“This is the only road on and off the island and last night there was another foot of water or so here,” Braddock said. “If you drove a small SUV or a car it was rough.”

People were driving through the water Thursday and Friday. The water level was lower Friday evening and residents hoped it would stay that way.

“If it don’t stop raining we’re gonna be in trouble,” said Braddock.
