Incredible view from inside of Cat. 5 Hurricane Lee

A look at what the hurricane hunters captured when they flew through the eye of Hurricane Lee.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A hurricane hunter on twitter @flynonymouswx, who is a part of the the 53rd weather squadron, shared this video from inside of Hurricane Lee as it reached Category 5 status over the Atlantic.  This view from inside of the storm is what meteorologist call the “stadium or dome effect” as it looks like you are standing inside of a large stadium. What makes the video that much more amazing is the amount of lighting.

Lightning inside of hurricanes is not terribly common and is typically seen when a storm is rapidly intensifying as Lee was doing at the time of the video. Hurricane hunters fly inside of these storms to get critical data on the hurricane so we can plug it into model outlooks and official forecast to help make them more accurate.
