Watch: Armadillo breaststroke swims across flooded Florida street during Tropical Storm Debby

Ever wonder if armadillos can swim? This one can - across Hidden River Trail (not so hidden) in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. — Nearly everyone has heard the question: Why did the chicken cross the road?

The answer to that really depends on the person who has posed the question, as it often comes with many variations.

Conversely, not too many people have heard the question: Why did the armadillo cross the road?

In a video shared with First Coast News Tuesday morning, an armadillo swam its best breaststroke across a flooded Florida street during Tropical Storm Debby on Monday.

The 34-second video recorded by John Annis captured the small mammal scurry across Hidden River Trail in Lakewood Ranch near Sarasota.

Who knew armadillos could make great swimmers?

Viewers of the video posted on Annis' Facebook page were impressed by the armadillo's performance so much so that it received compliments; one user on the post commented the swim was "an Olympic gold medal swim," while another said: "Who knew?!? Those things are indestructible."

"When he took the first step off the sidewalk area, I wasn't sure he was going to come back up. I am a trained combat water survival instructor, but I'm not sure I could have saved him...," Annis said in the post.
