VERIFY: Is there a 'Hurricane Nadine' coming to Florida next week, right after Milton?

The last thing Floridians and other residents in the Southeastern United States want to hear right now is that another hurricane is on the way. But is there?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Viral images show another hurricane on Milton's tail in the Gulf of Mexico. First Coast News VERIFIED whether one of the viral images, shown below, is real or fake.

The last thing Floridians and other residents in the Southeastern United States want to hear right now is that another hurricane is on the way. Fake images were shared on social media Thursday, like the one shown below.

The post reads, "Hurricane Nadine is now coming next week 10/18/24. Looks like the same path as Helene."

THE QUESTION:

Is there a 'Hurricane Nadine' coming to Florida next week, right after Milton?

THE SOURCES:

  • First Coast News Chief Meteorologist Tim Deegan
  • The National Hurricane Center

THE ANSWER:

This is false.

This track is not real.

WHAT WE FOUND:

The National Hurricane Center puts out advisories for any tropical system they are keeping an eye on. Below is a real image from Oct. 10 on what is developing in the tropics.

As you can notice from this image, there is no system brewing near the Gulf of Mexico. Leslie is a tropical system heading northeast out in the Atlantic. Milton is moving further away from Florida. And the yellow disturbance the NHC is watching near Africa has just a 20% chance of developing over the next seven days.

With all that said, that doesn't mean that late next week we won't be watching something develop in the Caribbean. But as of Friday, Oct. 11, there's no reason to think there will be a named storm in the Caribbean by next week.
