Mayor Curry: Bridges will likely close, any last-minute preps should be done now

Once the bridges close, they will not be reopened until the storm has passed.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As Hurricane Dorian approaches the east coast, Mayor Curry has announced that bridges in our area will likely close.

The announcement came during a press conference at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

When those closures will happen is unknown. Bridges will be closed when sustained winds nearby reach 40 mph.

The only bridge closure that is planned at this time is the Sidney Lanier Bridge in Glynn County, which will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

Once the bridges are closed, they will remain closed until the storm has fully passed. If a Department of Transportation inspection is necessary, it will be done before the bridge is reopened.

According to officials, all bridges are impacted by the storm.

If you have not evacuated and are regretting that choice, officials say to leave now. "If you think you made the wrong decision, you can go to a shelter right now," said Mayor Curry. "Move, now, go."

While the beaches still had visitors Tuesday, officials are telling people to stay off the beach.

Schools will remain closed until Thursday, Sept. 5. While the storm is expected to pass Wednesday, schools are being used as shelters and need to be cleaned and packed up before students can return for classes.

The latest observations show Dorian's core is less than 250 miles from Jacksonville and is moving toward the northwest at 6 miles per hour. Dorian is now a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Hurricane Dorian is slowly pulling away from the Bahamas and getting closer to Florida.
