Hurricane Dora cruises across three tropical basins

A rare event is taking place as Dora becomes a typhoon after crossing the international dateline Friday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tropical systems are around the world are meteorologically all the same thing.  Yet we divide where these storms develop and track in to different basins and in some of those basins they are called different names. For example in the Atlantic, Eastern Pacific and Central Pacific they are called hurricanes while in the western pacific they are called Typhoons.

Hurricane Dora which has been tracking across the Pacific ocean since July 31st as a Hurricane has tracked across the Eastern Pacific basin, Central Pacific basin and now as it crosses the international dateline will enter the western pacific basin where it will no longer be called a hurricane but instead a typhoon.

This is only the second storm on record to maintain hurricane strength across three separate basins, the only other one being Hurricane John of 1994.

Dora also assisted with fanning the flames associated with a deadly wildfire in Hawaii as it interacted with a high pressure north of the islands while tracking over 800 miles south of Hawaii. This interesting brought gusty conditions across Hawaii including Maui.
