This means vibrant sunsets and sunrises may be seen across portions of the state, including right here in Northeast Florida.

The Popocatepetl volcano emits smoke and ash, seen from Mexico City at sunrise on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Heads up, Florida! Volcanic ash is moving over the state.

Parts of the First Coast saw a more colorful sunset due to the ash Saturday, and it could affect Sunday's sunrise the same way. The small particles and gas from eruptions cause the sunlight to scatter and refract in colorful ways.

If the jet stream keeps its path over Northeast Florida, we could see a vibrant sunrise Sunday.

Pilots in Sarasota, Florida reported seeing ash earlier Saturday.

The volcano Popocatepetl is active in central Mexico. Upper-level winds are pushing the ash over the Gulf of Mexico and across parts of Florida.

You can learn more about the ash on the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center website.
