Debby knocks down trees, powerlines in Brunswick

A large tree fell during the storm on the corner of Pine and Walnut avenues, keeping crews busy with cleanup efforts Tuesday.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — After Debby blew through Brunswick Monday, crews were busy cleaning up downed trees and restoring power Tuesday.

A large tree fell during the storm Monday on the corner of Pine and Walnut avenues.

When the tree came down, it fell on a power line and broke two power poles. The hit was so hard, it severed the top of one pole, sending the transformer on it to the street below.

The tree completely blocked Walnut Avenue.

Brad Moran with the City of Brunswick's Tree Department said he was busy all Monday cutting apart trees in order to clear roads and yards. Tuesday he said he was waiting for the electric company to arrive to determine if the lines were still hot. After learning that, he'd be able to cut up the tree.

Two power poles had to be replaced Tuesday. Electrical crews with Service Electric Company from Atlanta arrived to do the job.

Power lines fell and trees were toppled all over Brunswick in Debby's wake. A power line was shredded at a hospital nearby.

Not far away, a pine tree fell on a house’s roof while two people were inside. They are okay. Firefighters cut the tree off the roof and placed a blue tarp on it for temporary protection.

There are numerous trees and power issues around Glynn County that are keeping crews busy.
