DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — Officials sent an alert Monday afternoon issuing coastal flood and "high rip current risk" warnings for coastal Duval County.
Officials say there could be moderate tidal flooding along the St. Johns River Basin and minor coastal flooding and beach erosion along the Atlantic coast, as the flood warning is in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday.
As for the rip current risk warning, it is in effect through Monday night. Officials say dangerous rip currents and rough surf of four to six feet is possible.
Furthermore, several roads may be closed during the timeframe of the coastal flooding warning and low-lying property including homes, businesses and some critical infrastructure "will be inundated."
If you're ever caught in a rip current, do not swim against it; instead, you should relax and float. Then if you're able, swim in the direction following the shoreline. If you're unable to escape the current, face the shore and call or wave for help.
