JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — We are wrapping up the 2024 hurricane season with the tropics remaining quiet, but it has been a more active than normal hurricane season. We had 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes.
While we hope the off-season will remain quiet, it's not unheard of to have storms from December to May.
There have been 12 tropical depressions, tropical storms or Category 1 hurricanes recorded in the month of December. The most recent was Tropical Storm 15 back in 2013. It didn't have a name because it wasn't classified as a tropical storm until later reanalysis.
January has had three tropical storms and two Category 1 hurricanes. The most recent was Tropical Storm One in 2023, which wasn't given a name because it wasn't classified as a tropical storm until later reanalysis. Category 1 Hurricane Alex occurred before that in 2016.
Only one tropical storm has been reported during the month of February, and that was in 1952. It brought impacts to places like Miami.
There has also been one tropical system in the month of March, and that system strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane. It moved from north to south and impacted places like Saint Kitts and Nevis.
April has had three tropical storms and three tropical depressions in the past. The most recent was tropical storm Arlene in 2017.
May has had many tropical depressions, storms and hurricanes. So many, that the National Hurricane Center once considered moving the start of the season to May 15, but instead decided to start issuing their tropical weather outlooks on that day. The most intense system was Category 2 Able in 1951.
Jacksonville's Most Accurate Weather Team will continue to keep an eye on the tropics during the off-season.
