Nassau County dog sanctuary seeks help after tree damages roof, kennels

Because it's a non-profit, if they are unable to get money to rebuild, they will need to pay for it out-of-pocket.

CALLAHAN, Fla. — Several dogs are OK Christmas morning after a tree fell on their kennels in Nassau County during the Christmas Eve storms that rolled through the First Coast area.

Now, Cusatti's Critters says it needs help to replace their roof as well as some other dog supplies like its dog houses.

According to the sanctuary's Facebook post, the tree fell on its roof and even made a direct hit on one of the dog's kennels.

“We live in the woods out here so private we always hear tree falls. we hear branches fall were like it’s not nothing new," said Assistant at Cusatti's Critters,  Monique Cusatti.

Until yesterday afternoon, Cusatti’s Critters experienced a destructive mess.

“There was a lot of light in there because we had tarped it off and we had found a tree hanging over two kennels and one dog look trapped to me and I ran and got everybody to come out and help,” said Cusatti.

Winston was the elderly dog that was trapped and left with minor injuries.

“I was stunned and I saw that Winston wasn’t moving I quickly ran and got everybody because I thought he was gone," said Cusatti.

The shelter holds 20 dogs in total and most of them are elderly. Right now the dogs are in the barn house until the kennel gets fixed.

“It was just devastating every which way because we worked so hard after hurricane Irma destroyed everything here. we flooded and had to rebuild this structure," said Cusatti.

Cusatti says it took them six months to build this shelter. One of their priorities is making sure these dogs are safe especially during winter.

“I don’t want to lose any dogs before it’s their time we want all of our elderly dogs to live out their lives to the fullest and get all the love that they deserve," said Cusatti.
