Drivers stopping at popular St. Augustine gas station to avoid busy Fourth of July traffic

Buc-ee's has been a go-to for drivers as droves of travelers hit the road for the Fourth of July.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — With the Fourth of July in full swing, drivers in Florida are stopping at Buc-ee's to take a break from the traffic.

First Coast News talked to a father and daughter who took the road from Indiana and made the 13-hour drive to the Sunshine State. Doug Anderson and his daughter decided to drive overnight to avoid the expected traffic saying, "It's just easier to drive, less traffic. Didn't have to deal with traffic in the big cities."

Sarah Pleasant with the Florida Department of Transportation is not surprised with the traffic.

"You know with the holiday tomorrow, and then you know a lot of people have off Friday, and will have a long weekend and I would imagine things starting to pick up," Pleasant said.

Drivers like Anderson are stopping at Buc-ee's to take a break from the traffic. Anderson had never been to Buc-ee's before and was blown away saying, "It's pretty wild. It's the biggest gas station I have ever been to."

Taking a break from the busy traffic, Anderson talked about how driving to St. Augustine from Daytona was quite a trip with all the traffic.

With roads busier than usual, Pleasant said drivers should never drive distracted.

"Put that cellphone down," she said. "Let someone else in your car be your navigator if you don't have a hands-free GPS set up."

Right before Anderson got into his car to get back on the road, he said the most important thing is to stay patient, and for those who have not gotten on the road yet, to leave early.
