Woman dies after crashing into JEA pole on Old Middleburg Road in Jacksonville

Due to the crash, the intersection of Old Middleburg Road and 103rd Street is shut down as crews replace a damaged 60-foot concrete pole, police said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman is dead after a crash on Old Middleburg Road Tuesday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the crash happened around 1 p.m. in the 5300 block of Old Middleburg Road North.

A woman in her mid-60s was southbound on Old Middleburg Road North when the vehicle she was driving veered off the road, crossing incoming lanes of traffic before crashing into a concrete JEA pole, JSO said.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and took the woman to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The intersection of Old Middleburg Road and 103rd Street was shut down as crews replace the damaged 60-foot concrete pole. Police said power will be shut down to remove the impacted pole.

Drivers will be detoured around the shuttered intersection.

Police said there is a "distinct possibility" the victim had a medical episode that caused the crash, but a medical examiner will need to determine the exact cause of death.

No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and no other vehicles were involved.

This marks the 122nd traffic fatality in Duval County this year, according to police.
