Woman dies after car crashes into Jacksonville church

The passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died after she was ejected from the vehicle when the car crashed into a concrete pillar at Redemption Church.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman is dead after a car she was a passenger in crashed into a church hitting a concrete pillar. The woman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle after the car slammed into Redemption Church, 2000 Lane Ave. S just after midnight Tuesday, according to Jacksonville police. The driver, who also was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The car was traveling westbound on San Juan Avenue which ends at the intersection of Lane Avenue S. "For unknown reasons, the sedan failed to turn onto Lane Ave and continued straight into the church parking lot," a JSO email states. "The car struck a concrete pillar that was supporting a metal overhang. This caused the car to overturn and eject the passenger, an adult female."

She was pronounced dead at the scene, the email states.
