Respected owner of Zoom Zoom Towing in Orange Park dies in weekend crash

Carlos Betancourt's business has a five-star rating on Facebook, with many reviewers calling Betancourt "honest," "friendly" and "professional."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A tow truck driver killed after being hit by a vehicle early Sunday morning on I-295 has been identified by his family. 

Carlos Betancourt, 30, was parked on the left shoulder of I-295 near Blanding Boulevard while helping a driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The tow truck was partially blocking the left lane, while both drivers were behind the tow truck.

At about 2:40 a.m., an SUV driven by a 23-year-old woman hit both men before hitting a concrete wall on the right shoulder, the FHP said. The woman was not injured.

Betancourt was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the FHP. 

The person Bentacourt was assisting, identified as a 19-year-old man, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, the FHP.

There will be a memorial to Betancourt Monday night at 8:30 p.m. at the shopping center at 8102 Blanding Boulevard in Jacksonville.

People from about 17 tow truck companies are expected to be at the memorial. They will not only pay tribute to Betancourt but also advocate for Florida's Move Over Law.

According to a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for funeral costs, Betancourt was the owner of Zoom Zoom Towing out of Orange Park.
