Man killed in crash on New Kings Road, police say 'speed and impairment may be a factor'

Police say the man in his 20s and driver of a Kia Forte, was involved in a collision with a driver of a Kia Sorrento on New Kings Road at I-295 Sunday morning.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man in his 20s was killed in a deadly overnight crash involving two Kia's Sunday morning in Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Lieutenant Nassim Mana with JSO's Traffic Homicide Unit says at approximately 3:13 a.m., the driver of a Kia Forte was traveling southbound on New Rings Road as they were attempting to take a left turn onto the I-295 northbound ramp.

The driver and only occupant of a Kia Sorrento, was traveling northbound on New Kings Road at "a high rate of speed" and collided with the Kia Forte. As a result of the crash, the driver of the Kia Sorrento was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

First responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced the driver of the Kia Forte dead at the scene. Nobody else was involved in the crash other than the two drivers.

Mana says speed and impairment may be a factor in this crash, as JSO's Traffic Homicide detectives, along with the Medical Examiner's Office are currently conducting an active investigation. The crash marked the 102nd traffic fatality in Duval County this year.

Police say the northbound lanes on New Kings Road at I-295 were temporarily closed for a couple hours on Sunday, as well as the exit onto New Kings Road from I-295 South.
