JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A wrong way crash on Interstate 95 at Pecan Park Road in Jacksonville early Sunday morning left a woman and toddler dead, and four others injured, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
At 2:20 a.m., FHP says an SUV was traveling southbound on I-95 North in the inside lane at the same time that another SUV was traveling northbound in the same lane in the area.
As a result, FHP's crash report states the front of both SUVs collided into each other.
The occupants of the SUV that was traveling southbound are a 25-year-old woman, which is the one who died in the crash, a 5-year-old girl who suffered "serious" injuries, a 3-year-old girl, which is the toddler who died, a 2-year-old girl who suffered "critical" injuries, and a 1-year-old boy who suffered "serious injuries, the report states; all of them are from Jacksonville and the report also indicates that they all were not wearing seatbelts.
The driver of the other SUV that was traveling northbound, a 42-year-old Jacksonville man, suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to the report; he was wearing a seatbelt and was the only occupant of the vehicle, troopers say.
The deadly crash caused all interstate northbound lanes in the area to close for hours, opening back up around 8:35 a.m. Northbound traffic was being diverted off onto Pecan Park Road, too, and the on-ramp onto I-95 North from Pecan Park Road was closed as well.
FHP did not release the identities of those involved in the accident.
