JSO: Police vehicle runs red light, seriously injures 78-year-old man

During a news conference, JSO says the patrol vehicle ran a red light and struck a white Jeep driven by the 78-year-old man.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 78-year-old man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office patrol car in the Town Center area.

The crash reportedly happened around 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning near St. Johns Bluff Road South and Town Center Parkway.

During a news conference, JSO says the patrol vehicle involved was detouring due to construction and ran a red light. While in the middle of the intersection, the patrol car struck a white Jeep driven by the 78-year-old man.

JSO says the officer was on duty but was not responding to a call at the time of the crash. Police say they do not believe the JSO officer was speeding at the time of the crash but that will be investigated.

Additionally, JSO says the man in the Jeep may have not been wearing a seatbelt.

Traffic lights in the area are not working at this time due to damage sustained during the crash.
