Semitrailer crashes on I-295 North due to strong winds in Duval County

The Florida Highway Patrol said a strong wind gust caused the driver to lose control and strike both sides of the overpass.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Strong storms caused a semitrailer to lose control and jackknife on Interstate 295 near Dunn Avenue leading to a crash that blocked all northbound lanes for hours on Sunday night.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a approximately 10:37 p.m., a strong gust of wind from the storm caused the driver to lose control and veer left, jackknife and strike the barrier on the left shoulder.

The driver then veered in the other direction, causing the right side of the vehicle to strike the right side of the overpass.

According to FHP, the driver turned left a second time and hit the barrier on the left side of the overpass again.

The cab of the semitrailer came to a final stop on top of the barrier blocking all northbound lanes of I-295 for hours.

The driver was not injured in the crash. Troopers said all lanes were back open at 1:12 a.m. Monday. 

First Coast News Meteorologist Robert Speta said that wind gusts reached over 40 miles per hour on Sunday night in Jacksonville due to a cold front that passed through the area.
