JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash involving a school bus and a car Thursday afternoon.
JSO said the crash happened in the 300 block of Lee Road in Jacksonville just before 2 p.m.
According to a tweet from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, no children were on the bus during the crash.
JSO said a female bus driver was leaving a service yard on Lee Road and headed to pick up kids when a Jeep Cherokee crashed into the back of the bus.
The bus driver did not sustain any injuries. Crews had to rescue the driver of the Jeep who they said was trapped inside his vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.
As officers continue to investigate, JSO said excessive speed may have played a role in the crash.
This is the 149th fatality on a Jacksonville road in 2021.
