JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man in his 40s was found dead on Moncrief Road West in Jacksonville Monday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
After originally calling the incident a shooting, JSO says the man's cause of death is "undetermined."
"A spent shell casing was found next to the male's body," JSO Sergeant Hungerford said. "It also appeared that he had been struck by a vehicle. There were no readily visible gunshot wounds on the male’s body."
Neighbors First Coast News spoke with say they didn’t hear gunshots, but aren’t surprised to see this happen at Cleveland Road where the sheriff's office initially said the shooting occurred.
Police say the incident happened at 4:10 a.m. and that the man's cause of death will be determined when the Medical Examiner's Office completes the autopsy.
"It's also possible that he was crossing a street by a shell casing that happened to be near the roadway or it could have been in his pocket, we don't know yet," Hungerford added. "But, it appears that he was struck by a vehicle, but we don't know what the nature of the shell casing is in reference to this investigation just yet."
All lanes of Moncrief Road West from Ken Knight Drive to Leonnie Road were closed for several hours due to the police presence in the area.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
