The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says a driver was fleeing a traffic stop on the Buckman Bridge and hit an off-duty police car at the Old St. Augustine Road exit.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The northbound ramp to I-295 is closed at Old St. Augustine Road in the Mandarin area after an off-duty police officer was hit by a car police say was fleeing form a traffic stop Thursday morning.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the driver fled the attempted stop on the Buckman Bridge. The officer attempting to make the stop did not pursue the vehicle, which took off and ran a red light at Old St. Augustine Road, hitting a separate, off-duty police car after exiting I-295, JSO said.

The driver the ran away on foot, but was found nearby and captured, police said. Charges are pending against the driver, police said.

One officer was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be OK, police said.

The intersection was closed in all directions as of 6:15 a.m., but police said they hoped to have it reopened within an hour. With the northbound ramp to I-295 closed, drivers are urged to use San Jose Boulevard as an alternate route.
