Multiple closures and detours take effect along I-10 in Jacksonville, bringing new lanes to roadway

The more than $170 million project will bring two additional lanes in each direction to Interstate 10.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Multiple road closures and detours will go into effect this weekend along Interstate 10 in Jacksonville as the Florida Department of Transportation continues work on a widening project.

The project is meant to alleviate traffic in an area of town that officials say is growing both in population and business.

“We’re widening bridges, we’re widening the roadway to support growth and hopefully at the end of the day, cut down on the commute time for folks coming from either Macclenny or the Westside to Downtown Jacksonville," Hampton Ray, an FDOT spokesperson, said.

FDOT hired Superior Construction for the over $170 million project, with hopes for completion in early 2025.

"That project is a really great project because it takes place in the existing right-of-way. We actually didn't have to purchase additional right-of-way to make the expansion for the construction project," Ray said.

Once completed, drivers will see two additional lanes in each direction on I-10 from Interstate 295 to Interstate 95.

"We have engineers and inspectors on sight every day to make sure that the work that's being performed meets our safety criteria but also provides a good value to taxpayers because, at the end of the day, it's really about making sure our infrastructure is hardened and to make sure that what we invest as taxpayers in our infrastructure, we want to make sure it lasts a really long time," Ray said.

Closures scheduled overnight starting 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., from Sunday through Thursday are as follows:

  • I-10 West exit to U.S. 17 (Roosevelt Boulevard) closed: Drivers will detour to the McDuff Avenue exit and turn left on McDuff Avenue to connect with Roosevelt Boulevard.
  • Cassat Avenue to I-10 West on-ramp closed: Northbound drivers will detour to Highway Avenue and take Lane Avenue to connect with I-10 West. Southbound drivers will detour to Lenox Avenue, to Normandy Boulevard and take Lane Avenue to connect with I-10 West.
  • U.S. 17 to I-10 East on-ramp closed: Drivers will detour to Roosevelt Boulevard, to Edgewood Avenue, to Plymouth Street and take McDuff Avenue to connect with I-10 East.
  • I-10 West exit to Luna Street closed: Drivers will detour to Cassat Avenue and take Highway Avenue to connect with Luna Street.
  • Luna Street to I-10 East on-ramp closed: Drivers will detour to Rayford Street and take McDuff Avenue to connect with I-10 East.

Closure scheduled Monday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning:

Closure scheduled May 18 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Stockton Street at I-10 closed: Northbound drivers will detour to Phyllis Street, to King Street and take Edison Avenue to reconnect with Stockton Street. Southbound drivers will detour to Edison Avenue, to King Street and take Phyllis Street to reconnect with Stockton Street.

Officials with the FDOT are reminding drivers to pay attention and slow down when they approach a work zone.

“We have constantly changing lane closures and traffic switches that take place along any particular corridor. So we really want drivers to be heads-up and be aware of the changes on the roadway as you move through a construction zone," Hampton said.
