Southbound lanes of I-95 near Philips Highway reopened after 'large washout' caused closure

The damage to I-95 occurred Saturday around 3:30 p.m., south of Philips Highway in Jacksonville, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: The southbound lanes of I-95 near Philips Highway in Jacksonville have reopened after a "large washout" caused them to close Saturday. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the on-ramp from Philips Highway onto the interstate is still closed.

A "large washout" prompted lane closures on Interstate 95 Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said what was thought to be a sinkhole was determined by experts to be a washout affecting the southbound area of I-95 South and Philips Highway.

The damage occurred around 3:30 p.m. south of Philips Highway. Right now, FHP said the right-center lane, right lane and exit ramp to Philips Highway from I-95 South are shut down. Three lanes on I-95 South remain open.

"Although it is not a sinkhole, caution should still be used while traveling in the area," FHP said in an updated release.
