Large washout closes lanes on I-95 South near Philips Highway in Jacksonville, FHP says

No timeline was given for when lanes will reopen.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — This story was updated with new information from officials.

A "large washout" prompted lane closures on Interstate 95 Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said what was thought to be a sinkhole was determined by experts to be a washout affecting the southbound area of I-95 South and Philips Highway.

The damage occurred around 3:30 p.m. south of Philips Highway. Right now, FHP said the right-center lane, right lane and exit ramp to Philips Highway from I-95 South are shut down. Three lanes on I-95 South remain open.

"Although it is not a sinkhole, caution should still be used while traveling in the area," FHP said in an updated release.

No timeline was given for when lanes will reopen.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution in the area.
