UPDATE: Driver killed after crashing into Intracoastal Waterway off San Pablo Road was 14-year-old

Deputies say they responded to reports of a vehicle in the water around 8:30 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered an SUV completely submerged.

A 14-year-old boy is dead after an SUV crashed into the Intracoastal Waterway off San Pablo Road South Wednesday morning, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said a vehicle driven by Cole Alexander Kelley of St. Johns County was located in the water inside the Dee-Dot Ranch on San Pablo Road South around 8 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered an SUV completely submerged.

Dive teams were called in to assist both the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department with recovering the vehicle, identified as a Isuzu trooper.

Deputies say that the sole occupant of the SUV, Kelley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He failed to navigate a turn in the road and went off an embankment into the water, deputies say.

The crash happened on a large plot of private land.

The bridge is over a mile away from the entrance to the Dee Dot Ranch.

We reached out to the Dee Dot Ranch's owners for comment about the accident.
