JFRD: 1 dead, 3 hospitalized after crash on I-10

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said the crash resulted in a vehicle fire Sunday night.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person is dead and three people were taken to a local hospital after a crash on Interstate 10 Sunday night, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

JFRD said the crash happened on I-10 westbound off the ramp to US 301 south. The crash resulted in a vehicle fire, JFRD also said.

Florida Highway Patrol says at 9 p.m., a sedan and SUV were traveling on I-10 west in the right lane.

According to a witness, FHP says the sedan which was driven by 47-year-old Wildwood man, was "traveling at an extremely high rate of speed," as it rear-ended the SUV driven by a 54-year-old Palmetto man.

"Both vehicles veered right on the shoulder and entered the tree line," the FHP crash report states.

The Palmetto man was pronounced dead on the scene, according to FHP.

The Wildwood man, a 52-year-old Green Cove Springs woman who was his passenger, and a 54-year-old Palmetto woman who was a passenger in the Palmetto man's vehicle, suffered "serious" injuries in the crash, the report states.
