JACKSONVILLE, Fla — A man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a traffic accident in the University Park neighborhood Thursday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO said the crash happened at University Boulevard North and Primrose Lane, which is just north of Arlington, around 8:45 p.m. Police said a single car crashed into a tree.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the driver was trapped inside a white Ford Explorer. The driver was unresponsive, police said.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department crews removed the driver from the vehicle and took him to the hospital, police said. The man appeared to be in his 20s.

A witness told police the SUV was speeding while driving south on University Boulevard and the driver lost control and crashed head-on to a tree on the northbound side of the road.

No one else was in the vehicle, police said, and no other cars or pedestrians were involved.

JSO's Traffic Homicide investigators are handling the investigation.
