FHP: Jacksonville woman inside stopped vehicle on I-295 express lane struck, killed

A Florida Highway Patrol crash report states the driver of a sedan failed to see the stopped vehicle, causing the crash.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 55-year-old Jacksonville woman is dead after a crash in an express lane of Interstate 295 on Sunday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

An FHP crash report states around 4:28 p.m., a sedan was traveling south on I-295 near Mile Marker 57 in the right express lane.

At the same time, another sedan driven by the 55-year-old woman was stopped in the right lane ahead of the first sedan.

According to the report, the 39-year-old St. Johns County woman driving the sedan failed to see the vehicle stopped ahead and crashed into the back of it.

The driver, along with a 15-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital. The driver suffered serious injuries and the children sustained minor injuries, the report states.

The 55-year-old woman in the stopped vehicle was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

All occupants involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts, according to the report.

The crash shut down all southbound lanes of I-95 near State Road 9B for hours, causing massive backups in the area.
