Head-on collision kills two in Green Cove Springs

FHP reported the crash at 2803 Russell Rd. A man and woman died after a head-on collision. The woman was ejected and wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Two people are dead after a serious crash in Green Cove Springs, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident was reported at 2803 Russell Rd. around 8:25 a.m.

FHP told First Coast News that a man and woman were in a Honda Accord when the female driver went over the double lines to pass a car. When she did that, they struck a dark colored vehicle coming the opposite direction head-on and sent that vehicle into the ditch.

The man and the woman in the Honda were killed, FHP said. Troopers said the woman wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

FHP said the two victims in the second vehicle were taken to the hospital in serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

FHP doesn't know if speed or alcohol were a factor. They are now investigating.

The road was shut down for several hours as both FHP and the Clay County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. As of noon, the roadway has been cleared.
