JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A person is dead after a crash on the Interstate 295 East Beltway and State Road 9B early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at 2:20 a.m. on Saturday.
An FHP crash report indicates that two vehicles, a maroon Honda Accord and a white Nissan Altima, were driving next to each other heading north on I-295 nearing SR-9B when they collided.
After crashing into each other, both drivers failed to follow the curve in the road, FHP said.
The Honda Accord left the roadway and crashed into the guardrail barrier on the right side of the road. The vehicle continued traveling down an embankment, overturned and caught fire.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP has not yet identified the driver and a next of kin has not been notified.
After the crash, the Nissan Altima veered left, crossed into the express lanes and crashed into a median before overturning onto its right side.
The 30-year-old driver suffered minor injuries.
The crash shut down lanes of traffic for hours. Drivers planning to use the I-295 E. Beltway to head north were diverted to Philips Highway as a detour.
