JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man is dead after a crash on the entrance ramp to Interstate 295 near Merrill Road Thursday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

An FHP crash report states just after 7 p.m., a sedan was heading northbound on the Southside Connector entrance ramp to I-295, north of Merrill Road.

The driver, a 44-year-old Jacksonville man, failed to maintain control of the vehicle and traveled off the roadway into a median, FHP said.

The driver then overcorrected, traveling across all roadway lanes and through the northbound entrance ramp of Merrill Road, before continuing off the roadway and striking a palm tree.

FHP told First Coast News weather did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash.
