Orange Park bridge deemed 'unsafe,' county officials announce detour

The bridge in question is on Moody Avenue, between Connie Circle and Meadow Drive, and runs over Indigo Branch creek.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A detour is in place after an Orange Park bridge was deemed "unsafe" due to damage Saturday night, according to Clay County officials.

The bridge in question is on Moody Avenue, between Connie Circle and Meadow Drive, and runs over Indigo Branch creek.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office alerted the county to the issue, and county officials announced Monday the damage was due to excessive rainfall.

According to county officials, excessive rainfall caused damage to a box culvert, which allows water to flow underneath roadways.

First Coast News crews on the scene observed cracks in the road's foundation.

Drivers in the area will need to take a 1.6-mile detour to avoid crossing the bridge:

Northbound traffic

The detour will begin at Connie Circle; drivers will take a right onto Dennie Drive and make a left onto Moody Avenue, a right onto Londonderry Drive, a right onto Blanding Boulevard, a right onto Meadows Drive, then a left turn onto Moody Avenue.

Southbound traffic

The detour will begin at Meadow Drive; drivers will make a left turn onto Blanding Boulevard, a left onto Londonderry Drive, then a right turn onto Moody Drive.

County officials said Sunday that the process to fix the bridge will begin Monday. This includes a bid process with possible contractors.

A timeframe for when the bridge will reopen was not given.
